GREENWOOD, S.C. — The Belmont Abbey women's soccer team opened its 2024 campaign with a close contest at Lander Saturday evening at Van Taylor Stadium.
The two teams were scoreless in the first 45 minutes but it was a Lander second-half goal that proved to be the difference in a 1-0 defeat for the Crusaders.
Belmont Abbey is 0-1 while Lander is 2-0 following Saturday's contest.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Both teams looked to settle in early as the first shot for either side was not taken until the 15th minute of the match.
- The Abbey was held to just two shots on the night with the lone shot on goal coming from Gabriela Enciso. Enciso's shot came midway through the half.
- Anna Richard recorded the other shot of the match for the Crusaders early in the second half.
- Four newcomers made their first appearances for the Abbey Saturday.
- The goal for the Bearcats came in the 63rd minute of the contest.
- Lander outshot the Abbey 10-2 on the evening.
- Brianna Sroka finished with two saves in the contest.
