HARTSVILLE, S.C. -- Belmont Abbey opened its women's volleyball season Friday with a split of two early afternoon matches at the 2024 Coker Cobras Classic. The Crusaders dropped the opening affair 3-0 (25-7, 25-11, 25-17) to Wingate before rallying for a 3-2 reverse sweep against West Virginia Wesleyan 3-2 (23-25, 18-25, 29-27, 25-22, 16-14).

The Crusaders improved to 1-1 with the result.

THE WINGATE MATCH

• Tyler Case led the Crusaders with five kills, while also making a team-high eight digs.
• Bailey Teter added three kills, with Chloe Lowder and Cailyn Myers chipping two each.
• Ella Schellenberg and Emma Youngblood dished out seven assists apiece.
• Lily Marsh tallied six digs and an assist, while Kylie Coghlin registered five digs.
• Riley Nickol and Coghlan served the team's two aces.

THE WEST VIRGINIA WESLEYAN MATCH

• Teter, a senior, had a career-high 25 kills, against five errors in 50 attempts (.400 hitting percentage). Her kill total was fourth-highest all-time and in a five-set encounter. 
• Case added 16 kills, while Ava Brown registered eight.
• Shellenberg finished the contest with 43 assists and two aces, while Youngblood added 15 assists.
• Nickol led the Crusaders with three aces, while Brown and Coghlan added two each.

• The Crusaders return to Hartsville tomorrow for two more matches
• They face USC-Aiken at 2:30 p.m. before taking on the host Cobras at 7 p.m.
