MOUNT OLIVE, N.C. — Casey Etter tallied her 21st career goal as the Belmont Abbey field hockey team opened the 2024 season against Indiana (Pa.) Friday afternoon at the Ray McDonald Sr. Sports Complex on the Mount Olive campus.
Etter's goal came late in the first half before IUP answered and later scored in the fourth quarter to earn a 2-1 win over the Crusaders. Friday's contest marked the season opener for both teams.
In addition to Etter's goal, freshman
Isabel Stankiewicz was credited with an assist in her Crusader debut. She was one of four newcomers to make their first career appearance in Friday's contest.
IUP outshot the Abbey 14-11 with Etter led all players with six shots and three on target.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The two teams played to a scoreless first quarter with each team taking three shots in the first 15 minutes.
- Belmont Abbey's first penalty corner came early in the second quarter. The Crusaders finished with 10 on the day.
- Etter's goal came with 1:25 remaining in the first half.
- IUP answered with the tying goal from Jess Davidson 18 seconds later.
- The Crimson Hawks got the winning goal with 5:45 left in the contest.
- The Crusaders had two shots and a pair of penalty corners in the closing minutes but were unable to find the equalizer.
- Chloe Parker made six saves on the afternoon for Belmont Abbey.

- The Crusaders continue the season-opening tournament with a contest against No. 3 Shippensburg at 1:30 p.m. Saturday.
