SALISBURY, N.C. — Senior goalkeeper
Will Whitman finished with a career-high seven saves as the Belmont Abbey men's soccer team opened the 2024 season with a 1-1 draw against USC Aiken Thursday at Catawba's Frock Field.
Thursday's contest marked the season opener for both teams.

Darren Lawlor scored the first goal of his Crusader career with fellow newcomer
Sam Jordan added the assist in the 10th minute. USC Aiken's goal came in the 32nd minute of the opening half.
This is the second straight year that the Crusaders and Pacers opened against each other. The two teams played to a 2-2 draw at Alumni Field in that contest.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Lawlor's goal also marked the first shot of the contest for the Abbey. He led the Crusaders with three shots on the evening.
- Jose Rabadan added the equalizer for the Pacers in the 32nd minute.
- The defense withstood plenty of pressure from USC Aiken as the Pacers outshot the Abbey 16-8 in the contest.
- Belmont Abbey had five corner kicks on the evening compared to four for the Pacers.
- A total of 13 Crusaders (seven starting, six substitutions) made their debut for the Abbey Thursday.

- The Crusaders return to Frock Field to face Montevallo in the second match of the weekend.
