BELMONT, N.C. — Two overtimes was not enough to decide the close contest between the Belmont Abbey field hockey team and Converse Wednesday evening at Alumni Field.
The Crusaders and Valkyries played to a scoreless draw over 80 minutes but it was the Valkyries who came away with the 1-0 victory after winning the penalty stroke shootout 3-2.
Belmont Abbey is now 0-7 overall, 0-5 in South Atlantic Conference play. Converse is now 4-1 overall and 4-1 in the league.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Casey Etter took the first of her game-high four shots less than two minutes into the game.
- Chloe Parker made the first of three saves to close out the opening quarter.
- Belmont Abbey withstood a third-quarter surge of five shots from Converse.
- The Crusaders took three shots in the two overtime periods.
- Chloe Kiser had three shots for the Crusaders with two of those on goal.
- Cecilia Müller and Isabel Stankiewicz made their penalty stroke attempts in the shootout.
- Belmont Abbey finished with 10 shots during regulation and overtime. Both teams had three shots on target.
- It is the second straight season that the Abbey and Converse have gone to a shootout.
UP NEXT
- The Crusaders take the weekend off before returning to play for a pair of road games next week.
- The Abbey will travel to play Mount Olive on October 2 and head to Lincoln Memorial on October 5.
- The games are scheduled for a 4 p.m. and 12:30 p.m. start times, respectively.
