BELMONT, N.C. — Hailey Leatherman tallied her first career goal as the Belmont Abbey field hockey team host Lander in South Atlantic Conference play Saturday afternoon at Alumni Field.
The Crusaders got the opening goal but Lander rallied late to tie and eventually take a 2-1 win in overtime.
With the results, Belmont Abbey is now 0-6 overall and 0-4 in league play. Lander is 3-2 overall and 3-0 in the conference.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Both teams made a save in the first quarter but it was Leatherman who got the Abbey on the board off an assist from Taryn Sabia.
- Casey Etter took two shots on goal in the first half for the Abbey.
- Lander took seven penalty corners compared to one for Belmont Abbey.
- Chloe Parker made seven of her eight saves in the second half including one on a penalty corner to end the third quarter.
- Victoria Hulst scored the tying goal with 51 seconds remaining for the Bearcats.
- Belmont Abbey took three shots in overtime with all of them coming in the early moments.
- The winning goal for the Bearcats came with 32 seconds left in the first overtime period.
- The Crusaders played its first game back on campus since November 5, 2022 against Converse.
- Isabel Stankiewicz had two shots for the Abbey.
