Etter Scores Third Goal of Season in Home Opener

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Casey Etter scored for the second straight game and third time this season as the Belmont Abbey field hockey team faced Newberry in South Atlantic Conference play Tuesday at Bessant Field.
 
Etter scored the opening goal but it was Newberry who earned the 2-1 win over the Abbey.
 
The game was played on the artificial turf at Queens after recent rainfall in the Charlotte area.
 
With the result, Belmont Abbey is now 0-5 overall and 0-3 in conference play. Newberry is 4-0 overall and 3-0 in the league.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Both teams were locked in a defensive battle early as each side took just one shot in the first quarter.
  • Etter's goal came with 47 seconds left in the opening frame.
  • Jillian Cain earned her first assist of the season on Etter's goal.
  • Belmont Abbey took three of its four penalty corners in the first quarter.
  • Newberry tied the game with her goal in the second quarter.
  • Both teams took two shots in the third quarter.
