FRANKLIN SPRINGS, Ga. — The Belmont Abbey women's soccer team used a quick start to its advantage as the Crusaders defeated Emmanuel 5-2 Saturday afternoon at the Stephen Lee Complex in the Conference Carolinas opener for both teams.
Saturday's contest was an offensive flurry for the Abbey, who finished with 31 shots and scored four goals in the second half en route to the victory.
Sabrina Cunha had two goals for the Crusaders while
Haley Long tallied a goal and three assists on the afternoon.
Gabriela Enciso added a goal of her own and two assists while
Lourdes Tompkins scored a goal against her former team.
Belmont Abbey improved to 2-1 overall and 1-0 in league play. Emmanuel is 0-4 overall and 0-1 in the conference.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Tompkins got the Crusaders on the board less than three minutes into the match when she scored from outside the box off the first assist from Long.
- Belmont Abbey had a 12-2 advantage in shots over Emmanuel in the first half.
- Brianna Sroka made one save on the day in goal.
- The Crusaders pushed the lead to 2-0 quickly in the second half thanks to Enciso's goal in the 47th minute off a Long assist.
- Cunha scored her first goal less than four minutes later thanks to an assist from Enciso.
- The Lions got a goal back off a penalty kick in the 54th minute but the Crusaders answered seven minutes later when Cunha headed the ball in off Long via a corner kick from Enciso.
- Emmanuel added a second goal in the 74th minute but Belmont Abbey put the game away with Long's first goal of the season in the 82nd minute. Enciso was credited with another assist.
- Long finished with seven shots on the day while Enciso had five. Cunha and Tompkins each had four as well for the Abbey.
- The Crusaders had 15 shots on goal compared to just three for the Lions.
- Ryleigh Dougherty made her first collegiate appearance in goal for the final 10 minutes of Saturday's match.

- The Crusaders continue Conference Carolinas play with a road match at Lees-McRae Wednesday at 4:30 p.m.
- It will be the first Northwest Division contest of the season for The Abbey.
