Crusaders Open Home Slate With 3-0 Victory over Bob Jones

BELMONT, N.C. — The Belmont Abbey men's soccer team made the most of its return to Alumni Field as the Crusaders earned a 3-0 victory over Bob Jones Tuesday afternoon in the home opener.

The Crusaders earned their first win of the season thanks to an Alexander Ljusberg goal in the first half and added to that total with a pair of goals in the second half.

Belmont Abbey earned its first win of the season and are 1-1-1 overall. Bob Jones is now 1-2 on the season.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Both teams took time to settle into the match with the first shot coming in the 17th minute.
  • The opening breakthrough for the Crusaders came in the 34th minute when Ljusberg scored on a breakaway with Sam Jordan earning the assist.
  • The Abbey got off to a fast start in the second half when Darren Lawlor scored his second goal of the season on a deflected clearance in the 50th minute.
  • The final goal came in the 65th minute off a corner kick that was headed out initially by a defender. The ball came to Pat Hissim and he found Bubby Towns for his first goal as a Crusader.
  • Belmont Abbey had a 12-3 advantage in shots and 6-0 in shots on goal.
  • The Crusaders had seven corner kicks compared to none for the Bruins.
  • Trent McConnaughey got his first start of the season in goal for the Crusaders while Jackson Gurr made his first appearance to combine for the shutout.

  • Belmont Abbey opens Conference Carolinas play at Emmanuel at 7 p.m. Saturday in Franklin Springs, Georgia.
  • The conference opener is a rematch of the conference tournament quarterfinal last season.
