Offensive Surge Lifts Abbey To Victory over Young Harris

GASTONIA, N.C. — Garrett Browder drove in four runs and Alex Sniffen struck out eight batters over seven innings as the Belmont Abbey baseball team defeated Young Harris 10-2 in the first round of the double-elimination portion of the 2024 Conference Carolinas Baseball Tournament Thursday at CaroMont Health Park.
 
The No. 7 seed Crusaders got off to a good start by scoring three runs in the first inning and finished with 15 hits on the afternoon, one shy of its season high. Additionally, the Abbey had three home runs on the day to break the game open.
 
Belmont Abbey won its fourth straight game and third against Young Harris in the last week to improve to 26-23 on the season. Young Harris is now 38-12 on the season and will play in the loser's bracket Friday.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The first three runs for the Abbey all came with two outs as Connor Tucker singled and Browder singled to set up an RBI single by Caleb Burr.
  • Todd Velotta kept the rally going with a two-run double.
  • Joe Whitaker made his first start of the season at first base for the Crusaders.
  • Sniffen allowed just one base runner through the first three innings.
  • Burr kept up his strong day at the plate with a lead-off home run in the fourth to make it 4-0. Young Harris attempted to get a rally going in the fourth but Sniffen was able to get out of a bases-loaded jam scoreless.
  • Browder accounted for the next four runs for the Crusaders that included a three-run home run in the fifth and an RBI single in the sixth.
  • Carter DuHaime accounted for the final two runs of the day for the Abbey with a home run in the seventh and an RBI ground-rule double in the ninth.
  • Young Harris' lone two runs came on a two-run single by Jack Enrico in the seventh.
  • Thomas Paxton retired all six batters he faced to close the game out for the Crusaders.
UP NEXT
  • Belmont Abbey will play the winner of the Barton-Mount Olive game in the winner's bracket at 7 p.m. Friday at CaroMont Health Park in Gastonia.
  • The Crusaders took 2 of 3 from Barton while the Trojans took 2 of 3 from the Abbey in their respective regular season series.
