GASTONIA, N.C. — Garrett Browder put together one of the best nights of his Belmont Abbey career finishing with three hits and runs batted in as an offensive surge lifted the No. 7 seed Crusaders to a 15-4 run-rule victory over No. 3 seed Mount Olive late Friday night at CaroMont Health Park.
The start of the contest was delayed due to inclement weather in the area earlier in the day.
Browder's first three hits were a pair of two-run doubles and highlighted by a grand slam in the third inning to break the game open for the Abbey.
The Crusaders also recorded 15 hits for the second consecutive night and won their third straight game to advance in the winner's bracket against UNC Pembroke Saturday afternoon. The Abbey also got a boost with
Josh Collett striking out eight over six innings to earn the win.
Belmont Abbey is now 27-23 overall while Mount Olive is now 35-15 and will face North Greenville in an elimination game Saturday.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Belmont Abbey got the scoring started with the first two-run double from Browder to score Todd Velotta and Connor Tucker.
- After Collett retired six of the first seven Trojans batters, Browder added his second straight two-run double to extend the Abbey lead to 4-0.
- Belmont Abbey finished with 10 two-out hits on the night.
- After a Mount Olive run in the top of the third, the Crusaders broke the game open with a six-run from highlighted by Velotta's two-run single and a grand slam by Browder.
- All six runs in the inning came with two outs.
- Landon Hahn drove in another run with a two-out hit in the fourth. The freshman made just his third start of the season and finished with two hits.
- The Crusaders added four more in the fifth inning with an RBI double from Carter DuHaime and a three-run home run by Justin Herrera.
- All nine Belmont Abbey batters recorded a hit in the victory.
- Mount Olive added three runs in the sixth but Jake Craddock pitched a scoreless seventh inning to end the game via run-rule.
- Hahn turned a double play to end Friday's contest.
UP NEXT
- The Crusaders will face No. 4 seed UNC Pembroke in the winner's bracket final scheduled for Saturday at 4 p.m. at CaroMont Health Park.
- The winner of that contest advances and will need just one more win to earn the conference title and the automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
