GASTONIA, N.C. — Drew Stegura put together another quality start and
Aengus Adams had a career-best four runs batted in as the Belmont Abbey baseball team opened its 2024 Conference Carolinas Tournament with an 8-5 win over King in the play-in game Wednesday evening at CaroMont Health Park.
The Crusaders, who are the No. 7 seed in the tournament, defeated the No. 10 seed Tornado to advance to the double-elimination portion of the tournament that begins Thursday.
Stegura finished with eight strikeouts in six innings and allowed just two runs in his start for the Abbey while Belmont Abbey jumped out to a 6-0 lead after three innings before holding off a late Tornado rally.
Belmont Abbey improves to 25-23 on the year while King closes its season at 14-32.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- After a scoreless top of the first inning, Caleb Burr got the Crusaders on the board with a two-run double to take an early 2-0 lead.
- Belmont Abbey opened things up in the third inning with a four-run inning.
- Carter DuHaime opened the scoring in the frame with an RBI single that was followed two batters later by a bases-clearing double from Adams.
- Adams added another RBI single in the fifth to make it 7-0.
- The Tornado got on the board with a two-run double in the sixth.
- Belmont Abbey added its final run thanks to Todd Velotta scoring on a double steal.
- Joe Whitaker made his first appearance for the Crusaders since his injury with a pinch-hit single in the seventh.
- King rallied with a sacrifice fly in the eighth and two home runs in the ninth but Spencer Cipro struck out the final batter to earn his second save of the season.
- The Crusaders finished with 13 hits on the day, which is the third-highest total in a game this season.
UP NEXT
- The Crusaders advance to the double-elimination portion of the bracket and will face No. 2 seed Young Harris at 3 p.m. Friday back at CaroMont Health Park.
- It will be the fourth game in the last week between the two teams after the Abbey took the series against the Mountain Lions last weekend,
