Abbey Baseball Sweeps No. 8 Young Harris on Senior Day

BELMONT, N.C. — The Belmont Abbey baseball team closed out its regular season schedule on a strong note as the Crusaders swept No. 8 Young Harris in a doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Abbey Yard.
 
The Crusaders defeated the Mountain Lions 4-1 in the opener before holding off YHC in a 4-3 victory in the nightcap. It was the final home game for 13 seniors within the Crusader program.
 
Alex Sniffen led the way in the opener for The Abbey by striking out a career-high 12 batters and allowing just one run and one hit in a complete-game victory.
 
In the nightcap, Jake Craddock put together a strong final relief appearance at home by not allowing a hit in 5.2 innings of relief for the Crusaders to complete the sweep and take the series from the Mountain Lions.
 
With Saturday's results, Belmont Abbey closes the regular season with a 24-23 record and 16-14 mark in Conference Carolinas play. Young Harris is 38-11 overall, 22-8 in league play.
 
THE OPENER
  • Sniffen got off to a dominant start by striking out the first six batters he faced.
  • Young Harris recorded its lone hit and run of the game with a leadoff home run in the third inning.
  • The Crusaders answered in the fourth inning with a solo home run from Garrett Browder.
  • Belmont Abbey took the lead for good in the fifth with a three-run frame.
  • Ethan McLain scored the go-ahead run on an RBI single from Connor Powell to make it 2-1.
  • Two batters later, Connor Tucker plated both Powell and Aengus Adams with a two-run double to make it 4-1 for the Abbey.
  • Adams and Powell each finished with two hits in the opener.
  • Sniffen only allowed two baserunners from the fourth inning through the rest of the game and faced two batters above the minimum to earn the win.
 
THE NIGHTCAP
  • Young Harris jumped out to an early 3-0 lead with a two-run home run in the first and a sacrifice fly in the second.
  • The Crusaders answered in a big way in the second inning with a three-run home run by McLain to tie the game at 3-3.
  • Belmont Abbey captured the lead for good in the third with a sacrifice fly from Carter DuHaime.
  • The Mountain Lions had two runners on base when Craddock entered the game in relief. He retired the final two batters to get out of the jam.
  • Craddock only walked two batters in his relief appearance and struck out four of the final six batters he faced to earn the victory.
  • Powell and McLain finished with two hits in the contest.
 
UP NEXT
  • The Belmont Abbey baseball team will compete in the Conference Carolinas Tournament that is set to begin Wednesday, May 1st at CaroMont Health Park in Gastonia.
  • The Crusaders will await their seed and first game of the tournament later Saturday night.
