Abbey Baseball Opens Series with No. 8 Young Harris

BELMONT, N.C. — The Belmont Abbey baseball team returned home to face No. 8 Young Harris in the opener of a three-game Conference Carolinas series Friday at Abbey Yard.
 
Todd Velotta had two hits and Caleb Burr drove in two runs for the Crusaders but it was the Mountain Lions who came away with the 8-6 victory.
 
Friday's contest marked the first meeting since the two teams faced off in the 2022 NCAA Southeast Regional at Wingate.
 
Eight of the nine batters in the Abbey lineup recorded a hit in the contest.
 
Belmont Abbey is now 22-23 overall, 14-14 in Conference Carolinas play. Young Harris is 38-9 overall, 22-6 in league play.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Both teams scored two runs in the first inning with Young Harris' runs coming on a two-run double.
  • Belmont Abbey got on the board with an RBI single from Jack Boyles and he later scored on a sacrifice fly from Garrett Browder.
  • The Mountain Lions added two more runs in the second inning with a two-run home run.
  • The Crusaders got within a run thanks to an RBI single from Aengus Adams to plate Ethan McLain.
  • McLain made his first career start for the Crusaders at first base and finished with a hit, walk and a run scored.
  • After a scoreless third, Young Harris added a run in the fourth to get a two-run lead.
  • The Abbey answered when Velotta stole home and McLain got to second base safely on a double steal.
  • Spencer Cipro entered the game in the fifth inning in relief of Drew Stegura and struck out six in his appearance. He also allowed four hits and three runs.
  • The Mountain Lions doubled the lead to 8-4 with a two-run single in the eighth but Caleb Burr's two-run double cut the deficit in half once again.
  • Both teams went down in order in the ninth to close the game out.
  • Drew Stegura took the loss for the Crusaders.
  • Young Harris' Zach Murray earned the win with a complete game.

  • Belmont Abbey closes out the regular season with a doubleheader against the Mountain Lions starting at 1 p.m. Saturday.
