MOUNT OLIVE, N.C. — Belmont Abbey left fielder
Connor Powell finished with three hits and drove in three runs over the course of a doubleheader against No. 19 Mount Olive Saturday at Scarborough Field.
However, the Crusaders dropped both games of the doubleheader, falling 15-1 in the opener before a 6-4 loss in the nighcap.
The Crusaders are 22-21 overall, 14-13 in Conference Carolinas play following Saturday's results. The Trojans are 32-12 overall, 19-7 in the league.
GAME 1
- Powell had the first hit of the afternoon in the third inning with a two-out double.
- Mount Olive jumped out to a fast start with a five-run first inning followed by three more runs over the next two innings.
- Powell drove in the Abbey's lone run on a sacrifice fly in the fifth to plate Jake Andriole.
- Andriole led the inning off with a single and Justin Herrera added a single in the inning for the Crusaders.
- Belmont Abbey had just three hits in the opener.
- UMO broke the game open with seven runs over the final two innings.
- Alex Sniffen took the loss for the Crusaders.
GAME 2
- Mount Olive scored the first two runs of the game in the bottom of the first inning.
- The Crusaders' first breakthrough came in the fourth inning with a three-run frame.
- Carter DuHaime earned an RBI after being hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and Powell drove in two more runs with a single to make it 3-2.
- A pair of two-out doubles drove in three runs for UMO as the Trojans retook the lead.
- Belmont Abbey chipped away at the deficit in the seventh as Connor Tucker drove in Powell, who led the inning off with a triple.
- A sacrifice fly in the eighth extended the Trojans lead to 6-4.
- Belmont Abbey was able to get the tying run on base but were unable to bring anyone else in.
- Josh Collett took the loss for the Crusaders.
