MURFREESBORO, N.C. — Jeremy Mahoney scored a career-high four goals as he and
Davis McCulley finished with six points each as the Crusaders defeated Chowan 20-11 Friday afternoon in the regular-season finale for both teams.
The Abbey used a run of nine unanswered goals between the second quarter to break a 5-5 tie to pull away for the victory. It is the second time this year that the Crusaders have reached 20 goals in a game this year as 10 different players tallied goals in the win.
Belmont Abbey closes the regular season with a 9-6 overall record and a 6-1 mark in Conference Carolinas play. Chowan is 5-8 overall, 2-5 in the league.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Quinn Smith had two goals and an assist in the first quarter while Riley Arsenault had three assists in the opening period.
- McCulley tallied the first two goals of the second quarter including the one that started the 9-0 run for the Abbey.
- The Crusaders scored the final four goals of the first half and opened the third quarter with five straight goals.
- Mahoney, Tre Childers and Nate Lorenzo accounted for two goals in the period.
- Mikey Sweigart and Jacob Power also finished with two goals on the day.
- Belmont Abbey's largest lead was 11 goals in the fourth quarter.
- Belmont Abbey out-shot Chowan 53-31, including 35-21 on goal.
- The Crusaders finished with 11 assists, matching a season high.
- Caleb Mulcahy had 20 ground balls and won 27 of 32 faceoffs on the day.
- The Crusaders had eight caused turnovers that included two each from Mason Thomas and Ben Johnson.
- Angus Snow made 10 saves in goal for the Abbey.

- The Crusaders are the No. 2 seed in the Conference Carolinas Tournament next weekend in Wilson, N.C.
- Belmont Abbey will play the winner of the No. 3 seed and No. 6 seed Chowan at 7 p.m. next Friday at Barton.
