BELMONT, N.C. — Caleb Burr led the Belmont Abbey baseball with four hits, all of them extra-base hits, as the Crusaders concluded its series with No. 25 UNC Pembroke Saturday afternoon at Abbey Yard.
Belmont Abbey scored eight runs in each contest of the doubleheader but it was the Braves who earned the sweep and series win. UNC Pembroke won the opener 9-8 before pulling away for a 14-8 win in the second game.
The Crusaders are now 21-18 overall, 13-11 in Conference Carolinas play. UNC Pembroke is 31-11 overall, 14-10 in the conference following Saturday's results.
HOW IT HAPPENED
THE OPENER
- After a scoreless first inning, UNC Pembroke got on the board with a three-run home run in the second.
- The Crusaders answered with a run in the second after Aengus Adams scored on a Braves error.
- Jake Andriole tied the game up at 3-3 with a two-run home run in the third.
- The Braves extended its lead with five runs in the fourth, all unearned.
- After a Braves home run in the fifth, Belmont Abbey began to chip away with a four-run frame.
- Burr was the first run to score after Carter Bass reached on a UNC Pembroke error.
- Connor Powell drove in a run in the next at-bat followed by a sacrifice fly from Todd Velotta.
- Garrett Browder added an RBI drawing a bases loaded walk to cap the scoring in the inning.
- Powell got the Abbey within one after an RBI single.
- Carter DuHaime was hit by a pitch three times and four overall. The Crusaders were hit nine times on the day.
- Belmont Abbey loaded the bases in the ninth inning but the Braves were able to hold on for the win.
THE NIGHTCAP
- UNC Pembroke opened the game with another home run to take an early 3-0 lead.
- Carter DuHaime got the Crusaders on the board with a sacrifice fly in the second.
- The Braves added three runs in the fourth off of two Belmont Abbey errors.
- Belmont Abbey pulled even with a four-run fourth highlighted by two runs scoring off a single by Powell.
- Adams got the scoring started with a two-run single followed by a Carter Bass RBI single.
- The Braves added three more runs in the fifth but Burr pulled the Abbey back within 10-7 with a leadoff home run in the fifth.
- UNCP scored the next two runs via home runs in the sixth and eighth innings.
- Belmont Abbey got a run back after Todd Velotta drew a walk with the bases loaded but the Crusaders were unable to add more to the lead.
- The Braves added two more runs in the ninth to close the scoring.

- The Crusaders host Wingate in a midweek contest at 5 p.m. Tuesday at Abbey Yard.
