Stegura Strikes Out Career-High 12 Batters in Victory over Braves

BELMONT, N.C. — Less than a week after throwing a one-hit, complete game shutout, Belmont Abbey starting pitcher Drew Stegura threw another gem by striking out a career-high 12 batters over seven innings as the Crusaders defeated No. 25 UNC Pembroke 7-3 Friday evening at Abbey Yard.
 
Stegura fanned a dozen Braves batters that also included a run of nine straight retired from the fourth through the sixth inning. He allowed just one run on five hits and only walked one batter on 122 pitches. He only allowed two base runners after the third inning.
 
Caleb Burr led the way offensively for the Crusaders with a pair of hits and three runs batted in.
 
With the win, Belmont Abbey improves to 21-16 overall, 13-9 in Conference Carolinas play. UNC Pembroke is now 29-11 overall, 12-10 in the league.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Burr drove in the first run of the game for the Crusaders with an RBI single from Burr to bring in Connor Tucker.
  • UNC Pembroke tied the game with a home run in the second inning but the Crusaders regained the lead in the third with a three-run inning.
  • Burr drove in two runs with a double and Jake Andriole drove in a run to give the Abbey a 4-1 lead.
  • Stegura retired the next nine Braves batters via strikeout, including seven in a row swinging.
  • Belmont Abbey extended its lead in the fourth when Carter DuHaime scored on a wild pitch after leading off the inning with a walk.
  • UNCP got two runners on base in the seventh but Stegura forced a groundout to end the threat.
  • The Crusaders got a pair of runs in the bottom of the frame with an RBI single from Andriole.
  • Brady Emerson entered the game as a pinch runner and scored off a sacrifice fly from DuHaime. He got to third after a failed pickoff attempt by the Braves.
  • UNCP added two more runs in the eighth but Blake Hanly struck out the final batter of the inning to stop the rally.
  • The first two outs of the inning came via strikeout from Jake Craddock.
  • Thomas Paxton pitched a scoreless ninth to secure the win for the Crusaders.
  • Belmont Abbey's pitching staff accounted for a season-high 17 strikeouts on the night to just two walks.
  • Additionally, Belmont Abbey clinched a spot in the Conference Carolinas Touranment with the victory.
