BRISTOL, Tenn. — The Belmont Abbey baseball team concluded its Conference Carolinas series with a pair of dramatic contests against King Friday afternoon at King Baseball Field.
The Crusaders dropped the opening game of the doubleheader 3-2 in 11 innings Friday before holding on for a 7-5 win in a game called after six innings due to darkness.
Alex Sniffen earned the win in the rubber game of the series for the Crusaders while
Connor Tucker led the offense with six hits over the course of the day.
Belmont Abbey improves to 11-9 overall and 8-4 in Conference Carolinas play. King is now 7-14 overall, 2-6 in league play.
THE OPENER
- Jacob Larkins made his first career start for the Crusaders in the opener as he struck out four in 4.1 innings of work.
- King got on the board with an RBI single in the first inning but The Abbey answered with a sacrifice fly in the third from Garrett Browder.
- The two teams went back and forth, scoring runs in the bottom of the fifth and top of the sixth, respectively.
- The Abbey's tying run came on an RBI single by Justin Herrera.
- Frankie Barrett pitched four scoreless innings of relief and allowed just one hit in his appearance.
- Tucker finished with four hits in the opener.
- The Tornado earned the win via a bases-loaded walk in the 11th.
- Belmont Abbey had a season-high 14 hits in the contest.
THE NIGHTCAP
- The Crusaders jumped out to a fast start with a four-run first inning thanks an two-run single from Joe Whitaker.
- He later scored on a sacrifice fly from Carter DuHaime while Garrett Browder scored a balk.
- Tucker continued to have an impact offensively, stealing home in the second and earning an RBI after being hit by a pitch.
- The Tornado scored runs in both the second and fourth innings while the Abbey added another run in the fifth on an attempted double steal.
- King attempted to rally in the sixth with three runs but Spencer Cipro entered the game and struck out the side to hold on for the win.
