Abbey Baseball Rallies For Series-Opening Win at King

BRISTOL, Tenn. — The Belmont Abbey baseball team rallied from a late-inning deficit by scoring eight runs over the final three innings en route to a 12-9 victory over King Thursday afternoon at the King Baseball Field.
 
Belmont Abbey scored eight runs over the final three innings and held off a ninth-inning surge from the Tornado to hold on for the win.
 
Jake Andriole led the Crusaders with three runs batted in and the team took advantage of eight walks drawn and a pair of Tornado errors.
 
Hunter Hill earned the win thanks to pitching a scoreless eighth inning in relief for the Abbey. Thomas Paxton pitched a scoreless ninth to earn his third save of the season.
 
Belmont Abbey improves to 10-8 overall and 7-3 in Conference Carolinas play. King is now 6-13 overall and 1-5 in league play.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Joe Whitaker got the scoring started for the Abbey with a one-out home run in the top of the first inning.
  • King pulled even in the bottom of the inning with an RBI double in the bottom of the frame then added runs in the second and third innings to lead 3-1 after three.
  • Belmont Abbey answered with a 3-run fourth inning to recapture the lead, starting with an RBI single from Todd Velotta.
  • The Abbey pulled even when Caleb Burr scored after a failed pickoff attempt at first base to send Velotta to third.
  • Velotta scored on an RBI single from Jake Andriole.
  • The Tornado re-captured the lead with two more runs in the fifth and extended the lead to 9-4 with a four-run sixth.
  • The Crusaders' rally began in the seventh as the team sent 10 batters to the plate starting with a leadoff walk drawn by Whitaker and a single from Connor Tucker. Tucker later scored on a wild pitch.
  • Andriole's RBI single brought the Abbey within two runs and Todd Velotta scored on a King error to get back within a run.
  • Carter DuHaime's RBI double tied the game in the eight and scored on a sacrifice fly from Justin Herrera to put the Abbey ahead.
  • Connor Powell added a pair of insurance runs with a two-run double in the eighth.
  • Hill allowed just one hit in his relief appearance
  • King attempted to rally in the ninth and had the bases loaded but Paxton was able to force a groundout to end the game.

  • The series concludes with a doubleheader beginning at noon Friday.
