Offensive Surge Helps Abbey Baseball Take Series from Lions

BELMONT, N.C. — The Belmont Abbey baseball team took its fifth Conference Carolinas series of the season thanks to a doubleheader split with Emmanuel Monday at Abbey Yard.
 
The Crusaders dropped the opener 3-2 before rallying back for a 14-1 win over the Lions in the series finale.
 
Caleb Burr and Todd Velotta each had three hits for the day for the Abbey while Alex Sniffen earned his sixth win of the season in the nightcap.
 
With Monday's results, Belmont Abbey is now 15-13 overall and 11-7 in Conference Carolinas play. Emmanuel is 18-14 overall, 7-8 in league competition.
 
THE OPENER
  • Drew Stegura made his first start since early February in Monday's opener. He struck out six in five innings of work for the Crusaders.
  • Belmont Abbey got on the board first in the second inning when Herrera scored in the middle of a rundown play. He was one of three Crusaders to be hit by a pitch in the inning.
  • Emmanuel got on the board in the third with an RBI groundout.
  • The Lions took the lead in the sixth inning with a two-run single.
  • Down to its last strike, Jake Andriole got the first hit of the day for the Abbey in the seventh with a single.
  • Carter Bass entered as a pinch runner and scored on an RBI double from Caleb Burr.
  • The Lions were able to record a strikeout to hold on for the win.
 
THE NIGHTCAP
  • After a scoreless first inning, Belmont Abbey struck with a three-run second inning with an RBI single from Velotta followed by a two-run double from Connor Powell.
  • Burr was the first to reach base in the inning with a one-out single.
  • The Abbey broke the game open in the fourth with a six-run frame after capitalizing on two Emmanuel errors.
  • Justin Herrera had two singles in the inning and scored a run after a throwing error from the Lions.
  • Browder added a sacrifice fly while Burr and Andriole hit consecutive two-run singles to extend the Crusaders lead.
  • Sniffen allowed just one run on four hits and struck out four in his six innings of work.
  • The Crusaders added two more in the sixth inning by capitalizing on three more Emmanuel errors in the inning.
  • The Abbey capped the scoring in the seventh with a sacrifice fly from Joey Humphrey, an RBI single from Landon Hahn and an RBI double from Todd Velotta.
  • Aidan Brown, Hunter Hill and Nic Aehlert combined to throw a hitless three innings to close the game out.
  • The 17 hits was a season-high for the Crusaders.

UP NEXT
  • Belmont Abbey continues its busy week with a contest against Emory & Henry at 5 p.m. at Abbey Yard. It will be the final home game before Easter break.
  • The Crusaders will play the next six games on the road following Tuesday's contest.
