BELMONT, N.C. — The Belmont Abbey baseball team picked up its second straight win and fourth in the last five contests as the Crusaders defeated Emory & Henry 12-5 Tuesday evening at Abbey Yard. Tuesday's contest marked the first ever meeting between the two programs.
The Abbey had four players with multi-hit games, including three each from
Todd Velotta and
Garrett Browder. Additionally, Velotta had three runs batted in.
Brendan Simonds picked up his first win of the season after pitching two innings of relief.
Belmont Abbey improves to 16-13 overall on the season while Emory & Henry is now 5-25.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Ian Vickers got the start for the Crusaders and pitched the first two scoreless innings on the night.
- Belmont Abbey struck first thanks to Browder's RBI single to bring in Jack Boyles.
- The Wasps took the lead with two runs in the third inning and one in the fourth before Carter DuHaime's two-run home run in the fourth pulled the Abbey back even at 3-3.
- Belmont Abbey took the lead for good in the fifth thanks to an RBI single from Connor Tucker and a two-run single from Velotta.
- Tucker scored the next inning after stealing third base and scoring on an Emory & Henry throwing error.
- Myles Hedgecock retired the Wasps in order in the seventh.
- Carter Bass, who entered the game as a pinch runner, scored on a wild pitch in the seventh while Boyles added an RBI single in the frame.
- Belmont Abbey scored its final three runs without recording a hit.
- Velotta hit a sacrifice fly while Connor Powell and Boyles earned an RBI after reaching base with a hit by pitch and walk with the bases loaded, respectively.
- Emory & Henry scored runs in the eighth and ninth but Ryan Weller recorded his first collegiate strikeout to end the game.
- The Crusaders have had double-digit hits in three of its last four games.

- Belmont Abbey plays its final game before the Easter break at Lander Wednesday evening. First pitch for the contest is scheduled for 5 p.m.
