BELMONT, N.C. — The Belmont Abbey baseball team returned home to Abbey Yard for the first time in 2024 and made the most of it with a doubleheader sweep of Coker Saturday afternoon.
The Crusaders won the opener 2-1 before coming away with a 9-7 victory in the nightcap.
Connor Tucker led The Abbey with four hits on the day which included two home runs on the afternoon.
Spencer Cipro and
Alex Sniffen both earned wins on the mound as well for the Crusaders.
Belmont Abbey improved to 2-1 on the season while Coker is now 1-2 on the year.
HOW IT HAPPENED
GAME 1
- Both teams were scoreless in the first two innings but Belmont Abbey got on the board with a pair of runs in the third inning.
- The Abbey had four straight singles in the frame starting with hits from Carter Bass and Connor Powell.
- Joe Whitaker and Tucker each drove them in with RBI singles in consecutive at-bats.
- Coker attempted to rally in the seventh and got on the board in the frame but Justin Herrera was able to catch a Cobras baserunner stealing second to end the game.
- Spencer Cipro made the most of his Abbey debut on the mound, allowing just one run on five hits and striking out five on 99 pitches.
- Whitaker, Tucker and Jack Boyles had two hits each in the opener.
GAME 2
- Tucker got the Crusaders on the board early with a home run in the bottom of the first inning.
- Coker tied the game and then took the lead with runs in the second and fourth innings, respectively.
- Boyles gave The Abbey a boost with an RBI triple in the fourth and later scored on a wild pitch.
- The Crusaders' breakthrough came in the fifth inning with a five-run frame sparked by a Cobras error.
- Boyles drove in a run after drawing a walk with the bases loaded while Joey Humphrey and Josh Wilson drove in two runs eafch on RBI singles on consecutive at-bats.
- Alex Sniffen got the start for the Crusaders and pitched five innings and striking out six while allowing two runs.
- The Cobras got back within 8-5 in the sixth before Tucker hit his second home run of the day in the bottom of the frame.
- Coker added runs in the seventh and eight inning but Thomas Paxton recorded the final five outs to earn the save.
- Paxton was one of four pitchers to make their first appearances for The Abbey along with Hunter Hill, Jake Andriole and Jacob Larkins.
