BELMONT, N.C. — The Belmont Abbey baseball team concludes its first homestand of the season with a midweek contest against Lander Tuesday at Abbey Yard.
The Crusaders jumped out to a 4-0 lead but it was the Bearcats who rallied to earn a 5-4 victory.
Justin Herrera and
Caleb Burr led the Abbey with two hits each.
Lander is now 4-0 on the season while the Crusaders are now 2-2.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Josh Collett made his first start with the Crusaders on Tuesday and allowed just two hits in the first five innings on the mound. He finished with 5.2 innings pitched with three runs allowed on three hits. He struck out four and walked four batters.
- The Crusaders' first hit of the game came in the bottom of the second inning from Burr.
- Belmont Abbey got in the board in the third in a frame that started with consecutive singles from Herrera and Carter Bass.
- Herrera later scored on a fielder's choice from Connor Powell and a throwing error from Lander.
- The Abbey offense kept rolling in the fourth with four straight hits to begin the inning highlighted by an RBI single from Will Hudler and a two-run double from Herrera.
- The Bearcats rallied in the sixth with four runs in the frame.
- Lander went ahead in the seventh on a sacrifice fly.
UP NEXT
- The Crusaders head on the road to face Trevecca Nazarene in a three-game series in Nashville, Tennessee.
- The series starts with a doubleheader at noon Friday and concludes with the third game of the series at noon Saturday.
- Belmont Abbey returns home next Tuesday to face Mars Hill. First pitch for that contest is scheduled for 4 p.m.
