Justin Herrera drove in two runs as the Belmont Abbey baseball team began its extended road trip with a contest at Wingate Tuesday.
The Crusaders fell behind early and had the tying run at the plate in the ninth inning but the Bulldogs were able to hold on for a 7-4 win over The Abbey.
Belmont Abbey is now 7-7 on the season while Wingate is 10-5 following Tuesday's result.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Wingate got on the board with one run in the first inning and extended that lead with four runs in the second.
- Justin Herrera got the Crusaders on the board with his first of two runs batted in with an RBI single in the fourth.
- After Ian Vickers made his first start for Belmont Abbey, Jacob Larkins came in and struck out five in three innings of relief.
- The Bulldogs added runs in the sixth and seventh, the Crusaders began their rally with a two-run eighth inning with Caleb Burr drawing a bases loaded walk and Herrera adding a sacrifice fly.
- Tucker's first hit came in the fourth inning and added hits in the eighth and ninth.
- His double in the ninth set up the RBI single from Carter DuHaime to get the Crusaders within three.
- The Abbey had the tying run at the plate but the Bulldogs were able to hold on for the win.
UP NEXT
- The Crusaders head back on the road to face Francis Marion for a three-game series against the Patriots starting Friday at 5 p.m. in Florence, South Carolina.
- Belmont Abbey will play its next six games on the road.
