FLORENCE, S.C. — Jack Boyles finished with five hits for the day and
Caleb Burr hit two home runs as the Belmont Abbey baseball team split a Conference Carolinas doubleheader with Francis Marion Saturday afternoon at Sparrow Stadium.
The Crusaders took the opener 6
-1 before the Patriots came away with the 4-3 win in the nightcap.
Boyles finished with three hits in the opener and hit a home run in the second game of Saturday's twin bill. Additionally,
Drew Stegura earned his second win of the season by pitching 5.2 innings of no-hit relief in the opener.
With Saturday's results, Belmont Abbey is now 8-8 overall, 5-3 in Conference Carolinas play. Francis Marion is 10-6 overall, 3-2 in the league.
GAME 1
- Both teams went scoreless in the first three innings before the Patriots got on the board in the fourth on a fielder's choice.
- Stegura turned an inning-ending double play to keep the Abbey within a run.
- A two-out single by Boyles helped the Crusaders get on the board as an RBI single by Connor Tucker in the fifth tied the game at 1-1.
- The Crusaders took the lead on an RBI single by Justin Herrera in the sixth.
- The Abbey added two runs in the seventh on a an RBI single by Boyles and a sacrifice fly from Garrett Browder. Browder made his season debut on Saturday.
- Belmont Abbey added two more runs in the ninth with another RBI single by Tucker and a sacrifice fly by Joe Whitaker.
- Stegura only allowed one base runner in relief on a walk in the eighth inning.
GAME 2
- Francis Marion jumped out to an early lead with two runs in the first and another in the second.
- Frankie Barrett pitched 3.1 scoreless innings to keep the Crusaders in the contest.
- Belmont Abbey began chipping away with the first of two third inning home runs by Burr and Boyles, respectively.
- The Abbey pulled even in the fifth with Burr's second lead-off home run in as many at-bats.
- Francis Marion went ahead in the sixth on and RBI single.

- The Crusaders will conclude the series against the Patriots Monday at 4 p.m. back at Sparrow Stadium.
- The game was rescheduled from Friday due to weather.
