BELMONT, N.C. — The Belmont Abbey baseball team came away with its second straight Conference Carolinas series win thanks to a doubleheader split against No. 18 Barton Saturday afternoon at Abbey Yard.
The Crusaders shook off a 19-1 defeat in the opener before answering back with a 13-3 victory over the Bulldogs in the nightcap.
Todd Velotta and
Carter DuHaime accounted for three hits each for The Abbey over the course of both games with DuHaime's breakthrough coming in Game 2. He finished with four runs batted in that also included his first home run of the season.
Belmont Abbey is now 7-6 overall, 4-2 in Conference Carolinas play. Barton is 12-2 overall, 1-2 in the league.
GAME 1
- Barton broke through early in the opener scoring four runs in the first and putting up a nine-run frame in the second inning.
- Blake Hanly and Andrew Glauber made their first appearances of the season for the Crusaders and did not allow a run in their respective appearances.
- The Crusaders' lone run of the game came in the seventh inning on an RBI single by Jackson Risk to bring in Josh Wilson.
GAME 2
- Barton got on the board in the first inning but the Abbey responded in a big way with a four-run first inning.
- Tucker got the scoring started with an RBI single to drive in Joe Whitaker, who reached on an error.
- DuHaime broke through with a three-run home run right after that to give the Crusaders an early 4-1 lead.
- Barton added runs in the second and fifth inning but Alex Sniffen was able to maintain the lead for the Crusaders in his five innings of work. Sniffen finished with five strikeouts, four walks and three runs allowed on the day.
- Belmont Abbey broke the game open in the sixth with another four-run inning starting with a Justin Herrera home run.
- Jack Boyles extended the lead with a two-run single followed by an RBI single from DuHaime.
- The Crusaders added two more runs in the seventh and three in the eighth to take a commanding 10-run lead.
- Herrera finished with three runs batted in during the second game of the twinbill.
- Frankie Barrett and Hunter Hill closed the game with two scoreless innings each on the mound.

- The Crusaders head on the road to face Wingate at 4 p.m. Tuesday.
- Belmont Abbey plays its next its next seven games away from Abbey Yard.
