Tucker’s Walk-Off Lifts Abbey To Extra-Inning Win over Barton

BELMONT, N.C. — Connor Tucker delivered a walk-off single down the left field line in extra innings as Belmont Abbey rallied to defeat No. 18 Barton 3-2 in 10 innings Friday evening in Conference Carolinas play at Abbey Yard.
 
Facing a 3-2 count with two outs in the 10th inning, Tucker hit a grounder down the left field line that just cleared the third base bag as Justin Herrera and Carter Bass had scored the tying and winning runs, respectively.
 
The hit was Tucker's second of the game and seventh overall on the evening for the Abbey.
 
Thomas Paxton earned the win after pitching the tenth inning for the Crusaders.
 
The Crusaders improved to 6-5 overall, 3-1 in Conference Carolinas play. Barton dropped its first game of the season and is 11-1 overall and 0-1 in the league.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Josh Collett worked his way out of an early jam for the Crusaders in the first inning.
  • The Abbey had three hits in the bottom of the first but did not score.
  • Collett worked his way out of a bases-loaded jam in the third.
  • Drew Stegura entered in relief in the fifth for the Cruaders and worked out of another bases loaded jam. He finished with 4.2 innings pitched and struck out six while allowing four hits.
  • Collett pitched 4.1 scoreless innings and struck out six in his start for Belmont Abbey.
  • The Abbey broke the scoreless tie in the fifth with Joe Whitaker's RBI double. In addition, Whitaker made his first career start in right field for the Crusaders.
  • The Bulldogs tied the game at 1-1 scoring on a double play but Stegura was able to strike out the final batter of the inning to keep the game tied.
  • Barton went ahead on an RBI via fielder's choice in the tenth inning.
  • Herrera got the final rally started with a lead-off double in the bottom of the inning. It was the first hit for the Crusaders since the fifth inning.
  • Bass and Jack Boyles walked to load the bases, setting the stage for Tucker's walk-off winner.
  • Jake Andriole and Josh Wilson made their first starts for the Abbey at designated hitter and catcher, respectively.
 
UP NEXT
  • The Crusaders conclude the series with a doubleheader against the Bulldogs starting at 1 p.m. Saturday.
