BELMONT, N.C. — Catherine Hendershott finished with a career-high 29 points as the Belmont Abbey women's basketball team defeated King 76-40 Wednesday evening in the home finale for the Crusaders.
Hendershott tallied her fifth straight game in double figures and added five rebounds, three steals and a blocked shot.
The win helped The Abbey clinched a share of the Conference Carolinas Northwest Division title thanks to a 5-1 division record.
Abigail Crain finished with 14 points while
Cate Schieber and
Peyton Nation had nine points each. Schieber finished with five steals to lead the team.
Overall, the Crusaders are now 20-6 overall and 14-2 in Conference Carolinas. It is the second straight year that Belmont Abbey has won 20 or more games overall for the fifth time in the last six seasons.
King is now 2-24 overall, 1-15 in the league.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Crusaders led 5-4 midway through the quarter and outscored the Tornado 19-0 in the final 5:14 of the frame.
- Hendershott and Crain accounted for 16 of the 19 points during that run.
- It is the fourth time this season that Belmont Abbey has held an opponent to 4 points in the first quarter this season.
- The Abbey started the second quarter on an 8-2 run.
- Hendershott continued her strong scoring pace by tallying 14 of the 26 Crusader points in the third quarter.
- The 29 points is the most in a single game by any Belmont Abbey women's basketball player this season.
- The Crusaders' largest lead was 41 points.
- Janiah Shular led Belmont Abbey with eight rebounds. She also accounted for four steals and five points.
- Belmont Abbey only turned the ball over seven times, matching a season-low.
- Riley James had six assists to lead the Abbey.
