Career Day from James Leads Crusaders Past Emmanuel

FRANKLIN SPRINGS, Ga. — Riley James scored a career-high 29 points as she and the Belmont Abbey women's basketball team used a strong second half to pull away for a 66-48 victory over Emmanuel Saturday afternoon at the Shaw Athletic Center.
 
Saturday's contest marked the penultimate game of the regular season for both teams.
 
To go with James' career night, she added four assists, three rebounds and two steals in the victory. Catherine Hendershott also finished in double figures scoring with 10 and she added six rebounds, four assists and three steals.
 
The win marked a series sweep over the Lions after the Abbey won earlier this season at the Wheeler Center.
 
With the win, Belmont Abbey improves to 21-6 overall, 15-2 in Conference Carolinas. Emmanuel is 16-9 overall, 12-5 in league play.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Both teams got off to a slow start offensively but the Crusaders closed the first quarter strong thanks to a 10-5 run.
  • Midway through the second quarter, Emmanuel got within six points but a 10-0 run for Belmont Abbey gave the team a 32-16 lead.
  • The 16-point advantage was the largest lead of the half for the Crusaders.
  • 17 of James' 29 points came in the first half.
  • The Lions scored the first six points of the second half but a 9-1 Crusaders run helped push the lead back to double digits.
  • A 7-0 burst to open the fourth quarter helped seal the game for the Crusaders. James accounted for the first five points in the quarter with Abigail Crain recording the other made basket.
  • Belmont Abbey's largest lead of the game was 23 points and the team did not trail at all in the contest.
  • Hendershott and Peyton Nation had six rebounds each to lead the Crusaders.
  • The Crusaders finished with 27 points off of 19 Lions turnovers.
  • Belmont Abbey finished with 11 steals for the game. It is the 12th time this season the Crusaders have recorded 10 or more steals.

  • Belmont Abbey closes the regular season with a game at Francis Marion on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. in Florence, South Carolina.
