WILSON, N.C. — Catherine Hendershott recorded her first double-double with Belmont Abbey and the Crusaders used a strong third quarter en route to a 76-60 win over Barton Saturday afternoon at Wilson Gymnasium.
Hendershott finished with 18 points – one shy of her career-high and all coming in the second half – while adding 12 rebounds and three assists. It is the fourth straight game she's finished in double figures and 12th overall this season.
Abigail Crain had a game-high 23 points while Petyon Nation and
Cate Schieber finished with 14 and 10 points, respectively. Additionally,
Riley James had a career-best 10 assists.
The Crusaders outscored the Bulldogs 27-8 in the third quarter to pull away and earn the win over the Bulldogs.
Belmont Abbey are now 19-6 overall, 13-2 in Conference Carolinas play. Barton is 7-17 overall, 6-9 in the league.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Barton jumped out to an 11-4 lead in the first quarter but the Crusaders responded with a 14-3 run over the final 3:30 of the period to take an 18-14 lead.
- Crain scored 15 points in the first half to lead the way for the Abbey who led by seven at halftime.
- Belmont Abbey had one of its best quarters of the season out of halftime, scoring 27 points on 70.6 percent shooting (12-of-17). The quarter started with a 13-2 run.
- The 27 points was the most in the third quarter in any game this season.
- The Abbey led by as much as 26 points in the second half.
- The Crusaders had nine steals and only committed 10 turnovers on the day.
- The Crusaders had 21 assists on the day, one shy of their season high against Erskine on January 20.
- Belmont Abbey was 7-of-16 from 3-point range with six 3-pointers made between Hendershott and Schieber.
- Crain surpassed 20 points for the second time in three games and fourth time this year.
- The Crusaders have won three straight games and seven of the last eight overall against the Bulldogs.
