Anderson Reaches 300 Wins, Abbey Takes Series over SWU

CENTRAL, S.C. — Belmont Abbey head baseball coach Chris Anderson reached 300 career wins as head coach of the Crusaders as the team wrapped up a three-game series with Southern Wesleyan with a doubleheader Saturday.
 
Anderson reached the milestone after the Abbey took the opening game of the doubleheader 10-3 over the Warriors. Southern Wesleyan took the final game of the series 12-11 in 11 innings.
 
Joe Whitaker led the way offensively for the Crusaders with four hits and four runs batted in over the span of two games. Spencer Cipro got his second win of the season as a Crusader in the first game as well.
 
Belmont Abbey is now 5-4, 2-1 in Conference Carolinas. Southern Wesleyan is 2-9, 1-2 in league play.
 
THE OPENER
  • The Crusaders got off to a quick start thanks to an RBI single from Whitaker in the top of the first inning.
  • Belmont Abbey added three more runs in the second thanks to a sacrifice fly by Connor Powell followed by Caleb Burr scoring on a passed ball. The scoring was capped off by an RBI single from Connor Tucker.
  • SWU cut the lead in half in the bottom of the inning but the Crusaders responded with two runs in the third as Burr scored once again on a passed ball. Todd Velotta added an RBI single in the inning.
  • Burr scored once again on a passed ball as part of a four run seventh. Velotta added an RBI groundout while Whitaker drove in two more runs with a single to center field in the seventh.
  • Jack Boyles drew four walks in the game.
  • Cipro struck out seven in six innings of work while Aidan Brown pitched a scoreless seventh to close out the game.
 
THE NIGHTCAP
  • Belmont Abbey scored runs in each of the first six innings of the contest.
  • The Crusaders capitalized on a pair of Warriors errors in the first inning to take a two-run lead.
  • A two-run home run in the bottom of the inning tied the game for SWU at 2-2.
  • Velotta added an RBI double in the second and two more runs scored in the third after Jake Andriole reached on an error.
  • After allowing five runs in the fourth, the Crusaders chipped away and tied the game at 9-9 on an RBI single by Joey Humphrey.
  • Trailing 10-9 in the eighth, the Crusaders took the lead after an RBI single by Whitaker. Velotta had tied the game earlier in the inning on a passed ball.
  • Southern Wesleyan sent the game to extra innings by scoring on a wild pitch in the ninth.
  • The Warriors came away with the win after drawing a bases-loaded walk.
  • Boyles and Tucker each had two hits in the second game.
  • The Crusaders used 10 pitchers in the series finale.
 
UP NEXT
  • Belmont Abbey returns home for four games next week starting Tuesday at 4 p.m. against Limestone from Abbey Yard.
  • The Crusaders welcome Barton in the first Conference Carolinas home series for three games starting at 4 p.m. Friday followed by a doubleheader at 1 p.m. Saturday.
