Four-Hit Day from Boyles Helps Abbey Baseball Past SWU

CENTRAL, S.C. — The Belmont Abbey baseball team got Conference Carolinas play off to a good start by a rallying from a three-run deficit to earn a 5-3 victory over Southern Wesleyan in the Conference Carolinas opener Friday at C Keith Connor Field.
 
Jack Boyles led the way offensively for the Abbey, finishing with a career-best four hits on the afternoon to lead the Crusaders. He also stole two bases and scored two runs on the afternoon.
 
Connor Powell had a two-hit day for Belmont Abbey while Drew Stegura earned the win by pitching 3.1 innings and allowing just one hit and striking out four. Thomas Paxton earned the save for the Crusaders.
 
Belmont Abbey is now 4-3 overall, 1-0 in Conference Carolinas play. Southern Wesleyan is 1-8 overall, 0-1 in the league.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Boyles got the first hit of the game with an infield single in the top of the first.
  • Belmont Abbey got out of an early jam by stopping a Warriors base runner from scoring after stealing third base.
  • Southern Wesleyan scored two in the third inning but the Crusaders shut the inning down after Justin Herrera picked a runner off of third base to end the inning.
  • The Warriors added a run in the fourth but Belmont Abbey rallied in the next half-inning to tie the game.
  • The rally started with two outs on a double by Powell and Todd Velotta reaching after being hit by a pitch.
  • Boyles drove in the first run on an RBI single and he and Velotta both scored on an RBI triple by Connor Tucker.
  • Josh Collett got the start for the Crusaders and pitched five innings and struck out two.
  • The Abbey went ahead in the eighth when Carter Bass drew a bases-loaded walk to bring in Joe Whitaker.
  • Whitaker led the inning off reaching on an error.
  • Stegura worked his way out a bases-loaded jam in the eighth-inning to keep the one-run lead.
  • Boyles gave the Crusaders a valuable insurance run scoring on a passed ball in the ninth. He led off the inning with a double.
  • The Warriors had runners on first and second base but Paxton came in to retire the final two batters and earn the save.

  • The series concludes with a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. Saturday.
