James’ Double-Double Helps Abbey to Seventh Straight Win

BELMONT, N.C. — Riley James recorded her first career double-double as she was one of three Crusaders to finish in double figures scoring as Belmont Abbey defeated Young Harris 67-52 Tuesday evening at the Wheeler Center.
 
James finished with 15 points and matched her career high with 10 assists to go with two steals and a blocked shot.
 
Peyton Nation had a game-high 18 points with three steals while Janiah Shular had 10 points off the bench for the Crusaders.
 
The Crusaders had a season-high 20 assists and earned their seventh straight victory to move to 9-2 overall and 4-0 in Conference Carolinas play. Young Harris is 7-4 overall and 3-2 in the league.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Belmont Abbey used the outside shot to get the offense going with four 3-pointers in the opening quarter.
  • Cate Schieber accounted for two along with Madison Lusk and James. Schieber also added four blocks defensively to go with nine points.
  • The Crusaders kept the momentum going with an 8-0 run to start the second quarter as Nation and Shular accounted for the first 12 points of the frame.
  • Belmont Abbey took an 18-point lead into the locker room.
  • The Abbey led by as many as 20 points in the third quarter before the Mountain Lions with a 12-0 run to get back within eight.
  • The Crusaders responded with nine unanswered points including seven from Nation.
  • The 10th assist from James came with less than a minute remaining in the contest on a layup from Leigha Dennison.
  • Belmont Abbey committed just eight turnovers, a season low.
  • The Crusaders had 22 rebounds, led by seven from Abigail Crain.
 
RECEIVING VOTES
  • Prior to Tuesday's contest, Belmont Abbey received votes in both the D2CSC National Poll as well as the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) poll.
  • Belmont Abbey was ranked No. 3 in the D2CSC Southeast Regional rankings released Monday.
 
UP NEXT
  • The Crusaders host USC Aiken in a nonconference game on Saturday.
  • The game is scheduled for a 2 p.m. tip-off at the Wheeler Center and it is the final game for the Abbey before the Christmas break.
