Double-Double from Crain Lifts Crusaders to Eighth Straight Win

BELMONT, N.C. — Abigail Crain recorded her second double-double of the season as the Belmont Abbey women's basketball team closed the calendar year with a 59-32 win over USC Aiken Saturday afternoon at the Wheeler Center. Saturday's contest marked the final nonconference game of the season for the Abbey as well as the eighth straight win.

Crain finished with 19 points and 12 rebounds for her ninth career double-double. She also had five assists in the win. Cate Schieber and Riley James also finished in double figures scoring with 11 and 10 points, respectively.  

With the win, Belmont Abbey improves to 10-2 on the season. USC Aiken is 3-8 on the year.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • USC Aiken took an early 5-2 lead but Belmont Abbey outscored the Pacers 12-1 to close the opening quarter.
  • The frontcourt accounted for the first 10 points of the game with Peyton Nation and Valeria Batista combining for the first eight for the Abbey. Crain had the other field goal.
  • Nation finished with nine points and five rebounds.
  • The Crusaders held the Pacers without a field goal for over 13 minutes in the first half.
  • The 14 points in the first half is the fewest allowed for the Crusaders this season.
  • The Abbey's largest lead was 32 points, which they had at the end of the third quarter after Crain's buzzer beater.
  • Belmont Abbey held USC Aiken to just one field goal in the third quarter.
  • Belmont Abbey nearly doubled up USC Aiken in rebounding with a 49-25 advantage.
  • The Crusaders had 11 assists with Crain and James accounting for five assists
  • Belmont Abbey had a season-high eight blocks with four coming from Batista.
  • The Abbey had 34 points in the paint compared to 16 for the Pacers.
  • It is the ninth time under head coach Kim Lusk that Belmont Abbey has held an opponent under 40 points over the last two-plus seasons.
  • The 32 points allowed is the fewest allowed since the Crusaders held Erskine to 25 points on February 15, 2023.

UP NEXT
  • Belmont Abbey is off for the next two weeks and will resume Conference Carolinas play with a road game at Barton on January 4th.
  • The game is scheduled for a 2 p.m. start in Wilson.
