Crusaders Hold off LMU in Home Opener

BELMONT, N.C. — The Belmont Abbey women's basketball team forced 22 turnovers and had three finish in double figures scoring as the Crusaders defeated Lincoln Memorial 49-45 in the home opener Wednesday evening at the Wheeler Center.
 
Riley James and Peyton Nation each scored 13 points for the Crusaders while Abigail Crain had 12 points to lead the Abbey. Nation had a team-best six rebounds while Crain blocked a pair of shots.
 
With Wednesday's results, Belmont Abbey is now 3-2 on the season while Lincoln Memorial is now 1-2.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Crusaders got off to a 6-2 early lead in the opening moments.
  • Leigha Dennison scored one of those baskets in the early part of the game for the Crusaders. She made her first career start on Wednesday.
  • Crain scored the final eight points of the opening quarter to give the Abbey a 14-8 lead after the first 10 minutes.
  • After LMU got within a point at 19-18, the Crusaders closed the half on a 12-3 run to take a 10-point lead into the half.
  • Cate Schieber had two 3-pointers in the final four minutes of the half provided a spark during that run. She also finished with four steals.
  • A 13-4 LMU run got the Railsplitters back in the game and the Crusaders trailed 40-38 after the third quarter.
  • James' 3-point play gave Belmont Abbey the lead for good at 43-40 with 7:02 to go in the contest.
  • The Crusaders forced eight LMU turnovers in the final quarter and held the Railsplitters to two field goals in the quarter.
  • After LMU got within two at 47-45 with seven seconds to go, James made a pair of free throws to give the Abbey the 49-45 lead.
  • James stole the ensuing inbounds pass to seal the game for the Crusaders.
  • Belmont Abbey scored 21 points off 22 LMU turnovers and had 24 points in the paint.

PREGAME HONORS
  • Prior to Wednesday's contest, Crain was honored for reaching 1,000 career points in last season's regular season finale.
  • Crain now has 1,131 career points which is in the Top 20 all-time in program history.
