AUGUSTA, Ga. — Cate Schieber made six 3-pointers and the Belmont Abbey women's basketball team made three free throws in the final minute to earn a 54-52 victory over No.25/RV Augusta Saturday afternoon at George A. Christenberry Fieldhouse. It is the second victory for the Crusaders over a ranked opponent this season.
With the game tied at 51-all in overtime,
Riley James made a pair of free throws followed by a free throw from
Janiah Shular. In between, the Crusaders made a pair of defensive stops to seal the game.
Schieber finished with a team-high 18 points while Crain had 12 points. Both players were part of a group of four Crusaders with six rebounds.
With Saturday's results, Belmont Abbey improves to 4-2 on the season and Augusta is also 4-2.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Schieber helped lead the way for the Belmont Abbey offense with three 3-pointers made in the first quarter.
- Tied at 22-all with just over four minutes remaining, Belmont Abbey closed the first half on a 9-2 run to take a 31-24 halftime lead.
- The Crusaders made two more 3-pointers in the third quarter and used that to maintain a 39-33 lead entering the fourth quarter.
- Augusta jumped ahead thanks to an 11-2 run in the fourth quarter but Schieber made a 3-pointer with 1:19 remaining to tie the game at 46-46.
- The Crusaders forced a pair of turnovers on the final two Jaguars possessions to force overtime.
- Six of the eight points from Belmont Abbey in overtime came from the free throw line.
- Peyton Nation provided the only field goal of the frame for the Abbey with 1:42 remaining.
- The eight 3-pointers made was a season-high for the Crusaders.
- Nation and Shular also had six rebounds each for the Abbey.
- Belmont Abbey had eight steals, including three from Riley James.
UP NEXT
- The Crusaders open Conference Carolinas play at home against UNC Pembroke at 5 p.m. Tuesday at the Wheeler Center.
- The contest will be a rematch of last year's conference tournament championship game.
