Crusaders Celebrate Homecoming With 5-0 Win over Shorter

BELMONT, N.C. — The Belmont Abbey women's soccer team extended its winning streak to four as the Crusaders defeated Shorter 5-0 during the annual Homecoming match Saturday afternoon at Alumni Field.

The Crusaders have five different players tally goals led by junior Anna Richárd, who had one goal and two assists on the afternoon. Reagan Cullen, Sabrina Cunha, Mia Muckenthaler and Haley Long all added to the total as well for the Abbey.

It was an offensive surge for the Crusaders, who finished with a season-best 35 shots.

Belmont Abbey improves to 6-1-2 overall on the season and 5-0-2 in Conference Carolinas play. Shorter is 1-7-1 overall and 0-6-1 in the league.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Belmont Abbey came out attacking early with seven shots in the first 11 minutes of play.
  • Cullen's goal came in the 15th minute off the first of Richárd's two assists.
  • Richárd got on the board less than two minutes later with her team-best fifth goal off an assist from Gabriela Enciso.
  • Cunha led the team with eight shots on the day and her goal came in the 19th minute off a corner kick from Long.
  • Muckenthaler closed out the first half with her second career goal on a header in the 39th minute.
  • Long capped off the scoring for the Abbey with her goal in the 65th minute off assists from Cullen and Richárd.
  • Ryleigh Dougherty made her first career start in goal and made one save to earn the shutout.
HOMECOMING HONOREES
  • Following the match, Brianna Sroka and Gianna Carneglia were recognized as part of the 2024 Homecoming Court. Carneglia was named the 2024 Homecoming Queen.

  • The Crusaders head on the road to face Virginia State at 1 p.m. Wednesday.
  • Belmont Abbey is scheduled to face Lees-McRae at home next Saturday at 4:30 p.m. from Alumni Field.
