NEWBERRY, S.C. -- Freshman
Elizabeth Young and senior
Mia Zuniga placed third and fourth overall, respectively, helping Belmont Abbey to a third-place team finish at the 2024 Newberry XC Invitational Saturday. The meet was a late addition to the Crusaders' schedule after last week's scheduled action -- ironically on the same course -- was canceled due to Hurricane Helene.
Young crossed the finish line of the 5K race in 20:29.3, nearly 19 seconds faster than Zuniga (20:48.0). The individual winner posted a time of 19:30. As a team, The Abbey scored 59 points, just two behind Division I The Citadel and 21 off of first-place Emory & Henry.
Belmont Abbey returns to action on Friday for its final regular-season meet of the year. The Crusaders compete in Queens' Royal Challenge at McAlpine Park in Charlotte.
