Last-Second Goal Rallies Crusaders Past Trojans

BELMONT, N.C. — Casey Etter scored her team-leading ninth goal of the season with 10 seconds left as the Belmont Abbey field hockey team rallied to defeat Mount Olive 2-1 Wednesday evening at Alumni Field.

The game had been rescheduled from October 19th due to travel issues.

Etter scored off an assist from Isabella Hite, which was the first of her Belmont Abbey career. Jillian Cain scored the other goal for the Abbey off an assist from Taryn Sabia earlier in the second half. The victory for the Crusaders is the first over the Trojans since October 20, 2021, a 1-0 road victory over the Trojans.

With the victory, Belmont Abbey improves to 3-12 overall and 3-10 in South Atlantic Conference play. Mount Olive is now 8-7 overall 7-6 in league play.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Crusaders withstood an aggressive offensive attack from the Trojans, conceding only one goal on 10 shots in the first half.
  • Chloe Parker made four saves in goal during the first 30 minutes of the match.
  • Mount Olive got on the board with seven minutes remaining in the half.
  • Sarah Schumacher recorded the first shot on goal for the Abbey early in the second half.
  • The Crusaders pulled even at 1-1 just over four minutes into the second half with an extra-woman advantage with Cain's goal on the Sabia assist.
  • The Abbey out-shot Mount Olive 11-4 in the second half with six coming in the fourth quarter.
  • Etter's goal came off a deflection near the goal with Hite getting the assist on the play.
  • Belmont Abbey had four penalty corners in the contest.
