GAFFNEY, S.C. — Jillian Cain and
Hailey Leatherman both tallied goals as the Belmont Abbey field hockey team began a three-game road trip with a contest at rival Limestone Saturday afternoon at Saints Field.
The Crusaders attempted to rally but it was the Saints who held on for a 3-2 win.
Belmont Abbey is now 0-10 on the season and 0-8 in South Atlantic Conference play. Limestone is now 7-3 overall and 6-3 in league play.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Crusaders came out firing early with five shots in the opening quarter.
- After a scoreless first 15 minutes, Limestone added two goals early in the second quarter to take a 2-0 lead into halftime.
- Leatherman tallied her second goal of the season with 7:31 left in the third quarter to get the Abbey on the board.
- The Saints responded just over a minute later to extend the lead back to two goals.
- Cain scored her first goal of the season with just over a minute of the fourth quarter played to get the Abbey back within a goal.
- Both teams were held to just one shot for the remainder of the contest.
- Belmont Abbey had a 15-10 advantage in shots and 10-7 in shots on goal.
- Leatherman led the team with five shots while Casey Etter had four.
- The Abbey also had 10 penalty corners.
- Chloe Parker made four saves in the contest.
UP NEXT
- The Crusaders will play two road games that had been rescheduled due to Hurricane Helene.
- Belmont Abbey will play Lincoln Memorial at 3 p.m. Monday in Harrogate, Tenn. in a game that was previously scheduled for October 4.
- Following that game, the Abbey will face Coker at 4 p.m. Thursday in Hartsville, S.C. in a game pushed back from Wednesday, October 16.
