Schieber's Career Day Helps Abbey Extend Win Streak to 10

CENTRAL, S.C. — Belmont Abbey sophomore guard Cate Schieber set another new career-high mark in scoring as the Crusaders used her shooting and a fast first-quarter start to defeat Southern Wesleyan 78-44 in a Conference Carolinas contest Saturday at Tysinger Gymnasium.
 
The Abbey scored the first 11 points of the contest as part of a 28-4 lead after the opening quarter. Schieber scored 12 points in the frame as part of her 26-point effort, finishing 8-of-13 from three-point range.  She also added four steals in the win.l
 
Abigail Crain also added 11 in the first 10 minutes of as part of her 15 points for the contest. She added five rebounds and three assists in the win.
 
Peyton Nation was the third Crusader to finish in double figures scoring with 12 and had nine rebounds, one shy of a double-double.
 
The win marked the 10th straight win for the Crusaders, who improved to 15-5 overall and 9-1 in Conference Carolinas play. The Warriors are now 7-12 overall and 5-5 in conference play.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The 28 points scored in the opening quarter was the most by Belmont Abbey this season. The four points allowed was the fewest allowed defensively this year.
  • After Southern Wesleyan scored its first basket, the Crusaders scored the next 17 before the Warriors made a second field goal at the end of the quarter.
  • The Abbey led by as many as 28 points in the first half.
  • Schieber added 11 points in the third quarter, including three 3-pointers.
  • The Crusaders made a season high 10 3-pointers in the contest.
  • The Abbey shot 50.9 percent for the game, the third time the Crusaders have surpassed that total in a game this year.
  • On the defensive end, Belmont Abbey held an opponent under 50 points for the eighth straight game.
  • Belmont Abbey out-rebounded Southern Wesleyan 37-27 and had 11 steals.
  • It is the seventh time the Crusaders have finished in double figures as a team in steals.  
  • It is the second straight year the team has had a double-digit winning streak. The Crusaders reached 15 wins in a row last season. 
UP NEXT
  • Belmont Abbey closes its three-game road trip with a contest at Converse on Wednesday at 5 p.m. in Spartanburg, South Carolina.
  • The Crusaders return home next Saturday against Chowan at 2 p.m. next Saturaday at the Wheeler Center.
  • The first KPI rankings of the season are set to be released Monday.
