Five Reach Double Figures, Crusaders Extend Win Streak to 11

SPARTANBURG, S.C. — Five Crusaders reached double figures and two finished with double-doubles as the Belmont Abbey women's basketball team defeated Converse 63-43 in a Conference Carolinas contest Wednesday evening at the Weisiger Center.
 
Abigail Crain recorded her second double-double in three games, finishing with 15 points and 11 rebounds. She also had four steals and a pair of assists in the contest. Cate Schieber matched Crain with 15 points and added five rebounds and a blocked shot.
 
Janiah Shular finished with a double-double of her own with 11 points, 10 rebounds and three blocked shots. Riley James and Peyton Nation added 10 points each in the win for The Abbey.
 
The win capped off an undefeated January for the Crusaders, who improved to 16-5 overall and 10-1 in Conference Carolinas play. It was also the 11th straight win for the Abbey. Converse is now 8-12 overall, 4-7 in league play.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • James accounted for the first two field goals made for the Crusaders in the first quarter.
  • Belmont Abbey got the offense going in the second quarter, outscoring the Valkyries 18-4 in the period. The Crusaders held Converse to one field goal in the period.
  • Crain scored 11 of her 15 points in the second half while Shular scored nine of her 11 points in the second half as well.
  • It is the second time in the last three games that two Crusaders have recorded a double-double in the second game.
  • The Abbey shot 55.6 percent from the field in the second half.
  • Belmont Abbey finished with 11 steals; the eighth time this season the Crusaders have recorded double-digit steals.
  • The Crusaders outrebounded the Valkyries 38-30.
  • Belmont Abbey finished with nine turnovers which matches the fewest since the season opener against Mars Hill.
  • The Crusaders are allowing just 51.4 points per game, which was the third-best in Division II entering Wednesday's game.
  • Both teams are now 3-1 in Northwest Division play after Wednesday's contest.
 
UP NEXT
  • The Crusaders return home to host Chowan at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Wheeler Center.
  • After Saturday's contest, four of the last six games for The Abbey will be on the road.
