CLOVER, S.C. – The Belmont Abbey field hockey team opened the 2023 home schedule as well as the South Atlantic Conference slate against Wingate Friday afternoon at Field Day Park.
Lainey Rogers tallied her first collegiate goal and
Isabella Grasso scored as time expired for The Abbey but it was the Bulldogs who came away with the 4-2 victory.
Belmont Abbey is now 0-3 overall, 0-1 in league play. Wingate won its second straight contest and improves to 2-1 overall, 2-0 in the SAC.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Brooke Ruiz made her first collegiate start for Belmont Abbey in Friday's contest.
- The Bulldogs got on the board with two goals in the first quarter from Novy Schrijvers.
- Lauren Tobin and Casey Etter took the first two shots for The Abbey in the first half.
- Wingate added a third goal early in the second half.
- Lily Willard made her collegiate debut in goal for the Crusaders in the third quarter. She finished with a pair of saves on the afternoon.
- The Bulldogs added a fourth goal early in the fourth quarter.
- Belmont Abbey scored its two goals in the final three minutes of play with the first coming from Lainey Rogers followed by the goal from Grasso.
- Wingate held a 9-7 advantage in penalty corners over Belmont Abbey.
- The Crusaders took five shots in the contest.

- The Crusaders are on the road for a pair of road games next week starting with a contest at Newberry on Sept. 12 at 7 p.m.
- The Abbey faces Lander on Saturday, September 16 at 2 p.m. in Greenwood, South Carolina.
- Belmont Abbey's next home contest will be in two weeks on September 22 against Converse. It will be a 2 p.m. start from Field Day Park.
