Crusaders Take On No. 9 Newberry in Close Battle

NEWBERRY, S.C. – The Belmont Abbey field hockey team faced a close battle with No. 9 Newberry in a South Atlantic Conference contest Tuesday night at Setzler Field. 
 
The Crusaders got on the board in the first quarter but it was the Wolves who were able to rally and earn a 2-1 victory over The Abbey. The start of the game was delayed by 45 minutes due to inclement weather in the area.
 
Belmont Abbey is now 0-4 on the season and 0-2 in South Atlantic Conference play. Newberry is now 4-0 overall, 2-0 in the league.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Crusaders took advantage of its first chance to score with just over eight minutes left in the opening quarter when Sarah Schumacher tipped in a pass from Casey Etter for her first career goal.
  • The opening goal came off of a penalty corner.
  • Belmont Abbey took seven of its 10 shots for the game over the first 30 minutes.
  • Chloe Parker finished with five saves for the contest and kept the Wolves off the scoreboard in the first half.
  • The Wolves pulled even just over five minutes into the second half.
  • Newberry secured the go-ahead goal with just over three minutes remaining in the contest.
  • Both the Crusaders and Wolves took seven shots on goal.
  • Etter, Jessica Rybicki and Abigail Kane took two shots each to lead Belmont Abbey.
 
UP NEXT
  • The Crusaders go back on the road to face Lander at 2 p.m. Saturday in Greenwood, South Carolina.
  • Following Saturday's contest, The Abbey will play its next three games at home.
