CLOVER, S.C. – Chloe Parker made eight saves and the Belmont Abbey field hockey withstood an aggressive offensive surge from Converse to earn a 1-0 victory Friday afternoon in a South Atlantic Conference contest Friday afternoon at Field Day Park.
The Crusaders faced 20 shots from the Valkyries, including nine on goal, that were turned away. Additionally,
Sarah Schumacher recorded a defensive save and scored the game's only goal with 3:35 remaining in the first quarter.
The win was the first of the season for The Abbey, who is now 1-5 overall and 1-3 in the SAC. Converse is 4-3 overall, 2-2 in league play.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Crusaders turned back an early charge from Converse with four shots in the first seven minutes of the game.
- The first shot from the Valkyries resulted in a defensive save from Schumacher.
- Schumacher's goal came off a penalty corner with Brooke Ruiz earning the assist. The shot was the first of the game for The Abbey.
- The Crusaders added a pair of shots on goal late in the first half from Ruiz and Casey Etter.
- After a scoreless third quarter, Parker made of her biggest saves of the game on diving stop to her right to block a shot from Nina Buyst.
- Parker's final save of the day came with 6:30 remaining in the contest to maintain the shutout. It is the first of the season and the 13th of her career.
- Belmont Abbey finished with five shots on the day, four on goal.
- Both teams finished with eight penalty corners.
