Second-Half Surge Lifts Crusaders Past Shaw

BELMONT, N.C. – The Belmont Abbey men's soccer team closed out its nonconference slate on a strong note with a 2-0 victory over Shaw Wednesday night at Alumni Field.
 
After a scoreless first half, the Crusaders tallied a pair of second-half goals from Walter Gomez and Brett Ramsey to snap a two-match losing streak. Additionally, Davis McBee added his team-leading third assist of the season.
 
Will Whitman got the start in goal for The Abbey and finished with four saves while recording his second clean sheet of the season.
 
Both teams ended tonight's match with identical 3-3-1 record.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Zion Duncan led the Crusaders with three shots in the first half of the match.
  • Whitman recorded three of his four saves in the first 45 minutes.
  • The Crusaders got on the board in the 52nd minute when Walter Gomez converted a penalty kick for his first goal of the season. The chance was set up by McBee drawing a foul in the box.
  • The second goal for The Abbey came in the 67th minute when Ramsey headed the ball in off a McBee corner kick.
  • The Crusaders outshot the Bears 16-10 for the match including 8-4 in shots on goal.
  • Belmont Abbey finished with five corner kicks on the night.
  • Jorge Aguilar made his first start of the season for The Abbey.
