Abbey Earns First Win of Season With Shutout of St. Andrews

BELMONT, N.C. – The Belmont Abbey closed out the opening weekend of its season with the first win of the year as the Crusaders defeated St. Andrews 3-0 Saturday evening at Alumni Field.
 
Belmont Abbey tallied a goal in the first half and added two more in the final 45 minutes to seal the win.
 
The Crusaders are now 1-0-1 on the season while Saturday was the season opener for the Knights.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Crusaders got on the board just over 17 minutes into the match when Brett Ramsey headed the ball in off a Davis McBee corner kick.
  • Belmont Abbey held an 8-6 advantage in shots over St. Andrews and also had four shots on goal.
  • Pat Cormier came off the bench and added his name to the score sheet early in the second half with his second goal of the season. Anthony Armas was credited with the assist.
  • The Crusaders capped off the scoring in the 78th thanks to Caelen Smith's first career goal with an assist from Zion Duncan.
  • The Abbey had five corner kicks for the contest.
  • Jackson Gurr made his first start of the season in goal for the Crusaders.
  • Ryan Cowie, Christian Saguilan, Samuel Atherton and Nathan Berhe were among those making their first appearances of the season for The Abbey.

  • Belmont Abbey faces Wingate at 7 p.m. September 6 at Alumni Field.
  • The Crusaders open Conference Carolinas play against Chowan at 4 p.m. next Saturday.
