BELMONT, N.C. – Alex Ljusberg tallied his first goal of the season as the Belmont Abbey men's soccer team hosted Wingate Wednesday evening at Alumni Field. The goal came late in the second half but it was the Bulldogs who came away with a 2-1 win over the Crusaders.
Wednesday's contest marked the midway point of a five-match homestand of the season.
Belmont Abbey is now 1-1-1 on the season while Wingate earned its first win of 2023 and is 1-2 overall.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Jackson Gurr made his second straight start in goal for the Crusaders and made one save.
- The Bulldogs got on the board first in the 32nd minute off a goal from Pablo Pozos.
- Wingate added a second goal in the 59th minute with a goal by Kosi Mafela.
- Pa Njie and Dorian Samo made their first appearances of the season for the Crusaders in the second half.
- The Abbey halved the deficit with Ljusberg's goal in the 83rd minute off an assist from Njie.
- Wingate held a 4-3 advantage in corner kicks.
- Pat Cormier made the first start of his career for The Abbey.
