BELMONT, N.C. – A run of four unanswered goals between the first and second half proved to be the difference as the Belmont Abbey women's soccer team defeated defending Conference Carolinas champion and preseason favorite UNC Pembroke 4-3 Tuesday night at Alumni Field.
All four goals from the Crusaders came from four different players as the team now has 22 goals in its first three home matches of the season.
Reagan Cullen and
Logan Parry scored in the first half to erase a 1-0 deficit while
Haley Long and
Sabrina Cunha both scored in the second half.
Mercy Bell finished with a hat trick to lead the way for the Braves.
Belmont Abbey improved to 3-1-2 overall and 1-0-1 in league play. UNC Pembroke is now 3-3 overall, 2-1 in the conference.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Belmont Abbey came out aggressively once again with five shots in the first 15 minutes of the contest.
- Bell scored the first of her three goals in the 18th minute.
- Cullen tallied her first goal of the year by knocking in a loose ball after a shot from Alyssa Espinosa went off the crossbar.
- Parry added her Conference Carolinas leading eighth goal with just over a minute left in the first half off a header. Gabriela Enciso was credited with her team-leading fourth assist of the year.
- Long scored her third goal of the season early in the second half before Cunha added a goal in the 59th minute.
- In total, the Crusaders scored three of their four goals in just over 15 minutes of action.
- Bell added her second goal just over a minute after Cunha's goal.
- Brianna Sroka made five saves on the night and made two key plays in the second half to hold off the attack from the Braves.
- The first came on a clearance in the 75th minute and the other came when Sroka saved a penalty kick goal with 7:30 remaining in the contest.
- The Crusaders outshot the Braves 23-21 for the match and 10-8 with shots on goal.
- Belmont Abbey took seven corner kicks compared to five for the Braves.
- UNC Pembroke entered the match as the No. 9 team in the Southeast Region in the United Soccer Coaches poll.
